How Much Sand Do I Need? Calculator & Guide

·9 min read
🎯TL;DR

A 200 sq ft paver patio needs about 0.62 cubic yards of coarse bedding sand (1-inch layer), costing $12–$31 for material. Use ASTM C-33 bedding sand for pavers, play sand for sandboxes, and mason sand for pool bases.

Sand is one of those materials where getting the quantity wrong is either expensive (too much) or annoying (too little, plus a second delivery fee). Whether you're laying paver bedding, filling a sandbox, mixing mortar, or leveling a pool base, the formula is the same — the depth and sand type change.

This guide covers how to calculate sand for every common project, what type of sand to use, realistic costs, and how to order the right amount. For a quick answer, use our free sand calculator.

The Formula

Sand is sold by the cubic yard. Here's the formula:

Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards

The 324 converts feet and inches into cubic yards in one step (27 cubic feet per yard × 12 inches per foot = 324). One cubic yard of sand weighs roughly 2,500–3,000 lbs (1.25–1.5 tons) depending on moisture content.

How Much Sand Do I Need?

The amount depends on your project. Here's a depth guide:

Sand for Paver Bedding

The most common reason homeowners buy bulk sand is for paver bedding — the 1-inch layer between your compacted gravel base and the pavers themselves. This layer needs to be coarse, angular sand (ASTM C-33 spec), not fine play sand or mason sand.

For a 1-inch bedding layer, the math is simple:

Square footage ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards of sand

Paver Bedding Sand by Patio Size

Patio SizeBedding Sand (1")Weight (approx.)Est. Cost
100 sq ft (10×10)0.31 yd³~775 lbs$6–$16
200 sq ft (10×20)0.62 yd³~1,550 lbs$12–$31
300 sq ft (15×20)0.93 yd³~2,325 lbs$19–$47
500 sq ft (20×25)1.54 yd³~3,850 lbs$31–$77

Don't forget you also need a 4–6 inch compacted gravel base under the sand. Use our gravel calculator for the base layer, and our paver calculator for a complete paver material list.

Important: Never use play sand or fine mason sand for paver bedding. It holds water, shifts under load, and causes pavers to settle unevenly. Coarse bedding sand (ASTM C-33) is the industry standard.

Sand for a Sandbox

Sandboxes should be filled 4–6 inches deep with washed, non-toxic play sand. Most play sand comes in 50-lb bags from home improvement stores, though bulk is cheaper for larger sandboxes.

Sandbox Sand by Size

Sandbox SizeCubic Yards (6" deep)50-lb BagsEst. Cost
4×4 ft0.30 yd³~8 bags$32–$48
5×5 ft0.46 yd³~12 bags$48–$72
6×6 ft0.67 yd³~18 bags$72–$108
8×8 ft1.19 yd³~32 bags$128–$192

For anything larger than 5×5 ft, consider bulk delivery — it's significantly cheaper per cubic yard than bagged. Ask your supplier for washed natural play sand that meets ASTM F1292 standards for playground use.

Tip: Place landscape fabric under the sandbox before adding sand. It prevents weeds from growing through and makes the sand easier to replace.

Sand for Pool Base

Above-ground pools need a smooth, level base. Most pool manufacturers recommend 2–3 inches of fine mason sand under the pool liner. This cushions the liner, prevents rocks from poking through, and makes leveling easier.

For a round pool, use the formula:

π × (radius in ft)² × depth (in) ÷ 324 = Cubic Yards

Pool Base Sand by Pool Size

Pool DiameterSand Needed (2" deep)Weight (approx.)
12 ft round0.70 yd³~1,750 lbs
15 ft round1.09 yd³~2,725 lbs
18 ft round1.57 yd³~3,925 lbs
24 ft round2.79 yd³~6,975 lbs

Always level the ground first before spreading sand. Use a long board and level to confirm the surface is within ½ inch across the entire area. An unlevel pool base creates uneven water pressure that can damage the pool wall.

Sand Cost Breakdown

Sand prices vary by type and whether you buy bulk or bagged.

Sand TypeBulk (per yd³)Bagged (per 50 lbs)Best For
Coarse bedding sand$20–$40$4–$6Paver bedding, pipe bedding
Play sand$25–$40$4–$6Sandboxes, play areas
Mason sand$30–$50$5–$8Pool bases, mortar, leveling
Polymeric sandN/A (sold in bags only)$20–$30Paver joints

Bulk delivery adds $50–$150 per load. Most suppliers have a 2–3 yard minimum for delivery. For anything under 1 cubic yard, bagged sand from a hardware store is usually more practical.

Bulk vs. Bagged Sand

The break-even point depends on how much you need. A cubic yard of sand equals roughly 27 bags of 50-lb sand.

AmountBagged CostBulk Cost (delivered)
0.5 yd³ (~14 bags)$56–$84Not practical (below minimums)
1 yd³ (~27 bags)$108–$162$70–$190
3 yd³ (~81 bags)$324–$486$110–$270

How to Order (and Not Waste Money)

  1. Measure the area. For rectangles: length × width. For circles: π × radius². For irregular shapes, break into rectangles and add them up.
  2. Choose your depth from the table above.
  3. Add 10% extra. Ground is never perfectly level, and some sand gets lost during spreading and compaction.
  4. Use the right type. Bedding sand for pavers, play sand for sandboxes, mason sand for pools. Using the wrong type causes problems.
  5. Check delivery access. Bulk sand delivery needs a clear path at least 10 ft wide for the dump truck.

Common Mistakes

  • Using play sand under pavers: Play sand is too fine and holds moisture. Pavers will shift and settle. Use coarse bedding sand (ASTM C-33).
  • Making the bedding layer too thick: More than 1 inch of bedding sand under pavers causes settling. One inch is the industry standard.
  • Skipping the gravel base:Sand alone won't support pavers. You need 4–6 inches of compacted gravel underneath. See our gravel base guide.
  • Ordering exact amounts: Always round up. A second delivery fee costs more than an extra third of a yard.
  • Not leveling before spreading: Sand follows the shape of the ground underneath. Grade and compact the sub-base first.
