How to Calculate Landscape Fabric
For a rectangular area, the base calculation is straightforward:
Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Square Feet
A 20 × 10 ft bed = 200 sq ft
However, buying exactly 200 square feet of fabric almost always leaves you short. Seams need to overlap, edges require extra material, and cuts around plants, curves, or obstacles create waste. A practical estimate adds an allowance on top:

200 sq ft × 1.15 = 230 sq ft — the minimum to order

How Much Extra Fabric Should You Buy?
For most projects, add 10–15% beyond the measured area.

Where Landscape Fabric Works Best
Under river rock and decorative stone
Landscape fabric is most effective beneath permanent decorative rock installations. It separates stone from soil, reduces how quickly the two layers mix over time, and makes future removal significantly easier. Under gravel paths

Where You Should Avoid Landscape Fabric
Under organic mulch
This is the most common mistake. Organic mulch decomposes into soil-like organic matter. Over aggressive perennial weeds
Fabric alone will not reliably control established perennial weeds or rhizomatous grasses. They spread through seams, openings, and fabric edges. The correct sequence is to remove existing vegetation first, then install fabric as a maintenance aid — not as a cure.

A product marketed as a weed barrier is not automatically appropriate beneath a driveway, behind a retaining wall, or inside a drainage system. When structural performance or water management is the primary requirement, use a geotextile rated for that application.
How Many Staples Do You Need?
A practical starting point is one staple per 2 to 3 linear feet along edges and seams. Use more in these situations:
- On slopes or uneven ground
- Around curves and irregular edges
- Where multiple sheets meet
- Around plant openings
- In windy locations before covering material is installed

How to Install Landscape Fabric
Remove existing vegetation

Grade the soil
Smooth high spots, fill depressions, and establish the proper drainage slope. Fabric follows the soil beneath it and will not correct poor grading or prevent water from collecting in low areas.
Roll out the fabric
